A leafy existence amid urban density: In Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße in Berlin Charlottenburg, on a vacant plot surrounded by listed buildings, an apartment block has been created with three inner courtyards connected by passageways. The bright concrete façades are structured by a clear geometry and feature floor-to-ceiling glazing that opens up both to the courtyards and to the street.
In front of the façades, 60-centimetre-deep balcony gardens and generous loggias form a green layer that can be extensively planted according to the residents’ own wishes. The chrome green colour of the steel railings, also known as ‘Cologne green’, reinforces the basic notion of greenery and is a symbolic greeting from the city on the Rhine to the German capital. This approach has yielded high-quality housing in a Wilhelminian-style neighbourhood.
The construction offers a total of 5,000 square metres of owner-occupied property with apartment sizes ranging from 35 to 225 square metres. Five regular storeys and four rooftop penthouse units rise up above the ground-floor apartments with their direct access to the inner courtyard. The ground plans with their spacious living and dining areas are individually designed.
